Tomodachi Circle is a small Discord community for adults who care about Japanese not just as a language to study, but as a way of noticing how people connect, what they leave unsaid, and what words can do.
Why a community?
Research in second language learning has long shown that speaking, sharing, and noticing with others accelerates fluency in ways solo study alone can't reach. It's not only about getting more input. It's about having a place to try things out, ask what you weren't sure about, and see how others handle the same thing differently.
I've been thinking about this for years. How much richer the learning gets when it happens among curious people. Tomodachi Circle is the space I've wanted to build for that.
Here's what you'll find inside:
Introduce yourself, chat freely, share what you noticed while studying Japanese or using the app. Ask, listen, laugh.
I share signs, ads, expressions, and everyday language from around Japan. The kind of Japanese that doesn't fit in a textbook. With notes on how they actually work.
Ask me anything about Japanese, including the parts most textbooks won't touch. I answer as much as I can, as a native Japanese friend, not as a teacher.
Once we get a sense of where everyone is in the world, we'll start a monthly group chat over Zoom or Discord voice. A relaxed space to just be together.
Hi, I'm Meg. Short for Megumi.
I'm based in Yokohama, Japan. Born and raised here, so Japanese is my native language, and English is the one I've been living with for years.
I work in the language industry as a content creator, but not as a teacher. Standing in front of a class or showing up on social media as a "face" isn't really my thing.
What I do love is the field of language education itself. I try to keep up with online courses, webinars, and articles on linguistics every month, and I'd love to share what I find with anyone curious enough to notice.
Tomodachi in Japanese is what came out of that.
The app is a space where adults can practice real conversation without the pressure of being graded.
Tomodachi Circle is the small community within, for those who want to go further. A place where it feels safe to try, to be unsure, and to ask the questions you've been holding. Where we take language seriously and lightly at the same time.
When I'm not working, you'll find me baking bread, doing yoga, playing piano, or planning my next trip. One day, I'd like to travel around the world and meet the people I've met through this circle in person.
Once you join, you'll find your monthly password in the members-only section of my Ko-fi page. Enter it in the app to unlock all topics. A new password is posted at the end of each month.
Yes. You can cancel from your Ko-fi account whenever you like. Your access continues until the end of your current billing period, so you can take your time. Payments already made are not refunded.
Yes. You can move between Practice Pass and Tomodachi Circle anytime from your Ko-fi account.
When you upgrade, you'll be charged the new tier's price upfront. Previous payments aren't prorated, so timing your switch near your next renewal usually makes sense.
Some basics help. Tomodachi in Japanese is a conversation practice app for adult learners who already know hiragana, katakana, and beginner grammar. There are no grammar lessons or drills here, just conversation with feedback that helps you notice patterns and expressions along the way. If you can read a menu and put together simple sentences, you're ready.
If you're still working on your foundation, or want a more systematic path alongside conversation practice, check out my Recommendations page for a few courses I trust.
You can still join at the regular price. Early Bird is my thank you to the first members who show up, but the same app and community are here for anyone whenever they're ready.
Not at all. Some members chat regularly. Others just read and enjoy what's shared. Both are welcome. Come as you are.
New topics are added regularly. I don't commit to a strict schedule because I'd rather add topics thoughtfully than fill a calendar.
